Powder metallurgy (PM) is one of Pennsylvania’s top manufacturing sectors, with many PM companies specializing in iron-based parts for automotive applications, including electric vehicles (EV). Penn State DuBois and Symmco fabricated a lightweight copper-based alloy with high power density to help the PM industry keep pace with the acceleration of EV adoption.

Penn State has been awarded five grants through the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development Manufacturing PA initiative. The initiative awarded $2 million across 29 grants in total and will bring together government, industry and higher education in holistic collaboration to spur new technologies and processes in the manufacturing sector.
New research published by Robert Loeb, a professor in biology and forestry at Penn State DuBois, outlines his efforts to bring the experience of rural forests to those who live in cities, with an eye toward what Loeb calls “environmental justice.”

Dozens of people located in North Central Pennsylvania recently applied to Ben Franklin’s $50,000 BIG IDEA Contest, held in conjunction with the North Central PA LaunchBox Powered by Penn State DuBois. This week the team had the difficult job of identifying just a few finalists from all of the great applications received from emerging tech startups and small manufacturers. The eight companies moving forward in the contest will make a pitch presentation to a panel of local judges on Thursday, Nov. 21 – location to be determined.
